Meaning: Alebrije (also known as Oaxacan woodcarvings) are vividly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical or mythological creatures. The earliest alebrijes, as well as the name, are credited to Pedro Linares, a México City craftsman who replicated wild, strangely colored animals he saw in his dreams- chimerical monsters typically including wings, horns, tails, sharp jaws, and bulging eyes.
