Journal Log, Ester

Maven has been a very frequent visitor lately. I'm glad, I really enjoy having him around, he takes care of our books, even the most forgotten ones, because he never forgets them. He's very hardworking, he dusts all the shelves, rearranges the books to be in the perfect order and always helps me find the book I currently need.

He's been studying magic a lot lately, which is reflected in his own magical abilities. I can't say I understand magic very well, it's too much for my old mind to comprehend, but I'm happy seeing my paralogos friends happy and Maven seems to be happy when he can practice his magic.

If I were to hear about paralogos' magic when I was younger, I'd imagine powerful witches shifting the sea and turning the sun off, raising the dead and poisoning the crops. But paralogos are nothing like that, I can see that now. Yes, I've met powerful paralogos that use their skills for their own benefit, but, just like humans, most paralogos are good and pure, and so is their magic. A lot of the time their magic is completely harmless, like Maven's almost highest magic ability. He could have chosen to learn anything, but he chose to create an illusion of a book in his paws. It took him a long time to master this ability, nearly destroying a few books in the process, which he needed a lot of calming after, but he's done it and can now do it almost effortlessly. I've seen the look in his eyes and I know he'll use this ability to prank our dear friend Plamienka who likes to... borrow some of our books.

The past few weeks Maven's been spending hours in his study room, not letting anyone in, barely going outside. My dear assistant Nakuset has been worried about him. I know they care a lot about our paralogos, if they could, they'd adopt every stray creature they'd meet. Their heart is very kind and I'm glad I've found them to help me out. Seeing Maven struggle has concerned us both, especially because Maven rarely seems to struggle, he's always the first to figure things out or help others when they need. But, after yesterday, I'm no longer concerned.

Maven has been locked in his study room for hours once again, Nakuset and I unaware of what he'd been doing. I was just making dinner in the kitchen for the two of us, when Maven emerged with a sigh, probably wanting a comforting hug. I turned around and gasped "Oh dear, are you okay? What happened to you?" and rushed to him. My beloved paralogos friend seemed like he'd aged a hundred years and has learned a world of wisdom. I can't really explain it, he didn't look too different from what he usually looks like, but his essense or energy just screamed of "his" age and experience. Maven looked at me confused. "You look like you could beat my age and I'm two hundred years old!" I tried to joke, but I was still very much concerned with how he's been overworking himself. I thought that, maybe, it's been too much for him now, that he's been working too hard and is now too tired, too exhausted. But Maven managed to surprise me once more, because in that moment his eyes lit up and a wide grin appeared on his face. He turned away from me and ran away, leaving me even more puzzled than before. I've later learned he's rushed to a mirror to look at himself, though he himself couldn't see the difference. He's been very excited and releived after this and promised me to relax for the next few weeks. He had nothing to study anymore anyway. What I thought was exhaustion was actually what he's been working on - his final magical ability, him trying to shift his appearance temporarily. He's mastered it without even realising he has and I couldn't be more proud of him. I must admit, I'm not sure why Maven chose this kind of magic, but as I stated earlier, I don't know enough about magic anyway. Maven seems happy with this and that's all that matters to me. I couldn't be more satisfied.

A new magical ability has appeared in our Paralogos encyclopedia that Nakuset and I keep and update. "Maven's Tier 6 magic: This paralogos can temporarily shapeshift into looking older and wiser". We hope to keep updating it with more paralogos and more knowledge about them in general and for particular paralogos as well. Maven is the third paralogos I've known this closely that has mastered all six magic tiers, so to say I'm impressed would be an understatement, especially when I saw his entire journey, from when he only knew one simple magic ability to now. He's truly a smart and strong paralogos and I'm glad to be his friend. I hope he realizes how truly appreciated he is by all of us.
