Word: Butterfly (Monarch)
Origin:
Old English, from butter + fly perhaps from the cream or yellow color of common species, or from an old belief that the insects stole butter.
Definition:
An insect with two pairs of large wings that are covered with tiny scales, usually brightly colored, and typically held erect when at rest.
Butterflies fly by day, have clubbed or dilated antennae, and usually feed on nectar.
The name "monarch" may be in honor of King William III of England.
The monarch was originally described by Linnaeus in his Systema Naturae of 1758 and placed in the genus Papilio.
In 1780, Jan Krzysztof Kluk used the monarch as the type species for a new genus Danaus.
