Level 6 - abstract
Word: Tarot (The World)
Origin:
Tarot: 1590s, from French tarot (16c.), from Old Italian tarocchi (plural), of unknown origin, perhaps from Arabic taraha "he rejected, put aside." The deck first was used in Italy 14c., as playing cards as well as for fortune-telling. The tarots, strictly speaking, are the 22 figured cards added to the 56-card suits pack.
The World: Old English woruld, worold "human existence, the affairs of life," also "a long period of time," also "the human race, mankind, humanity," a word peculiar to Germanic languages (cognates: Old Saxon werold, Old Frisian warld, Dutch wereld, Old Norse verold, Old High German weralt, German Welt), with a literal sense of "age of man," from Proto-Germanic *weraldi-, a compound of *wer "man" (Old English wer, still in werewolf; see virile) + *ald "age" (from PIE root *al- (2) "to grow, nourish").
Definition:
The 21st Major Arcana card in most tarot card decks, generally portraying a woman floating surrounded by a wreath/ouroboros, with a man, an eagle, an ox, and a lion in the four corners. Upright, the card represents concepts such as completion, accomplishment, and travel. Reversed, the card represents things such as stagnation, being stressed or worn out, and delays.
