Level 6 - abstract
Word: Tarot (The Moon)
Origin:
Tarot: 1590s, from French tarot (16c.), from Old Italian tarocchi (plural), of unknown origin, perhaps from Arabic taraha "he rejected, put aside." The deck first was used in Italy 14c., as playing cards as well as for fortune-telling. The tarots, strictly speaking, are the 22 figured cards added to the 56-card suits pack.
The Moon: Old English mōna, of Germanic origin; related to Dutch maan and German Mond, also to month, from an Indo-European root shared by Latin mensis and Greek mēn ‘month’, and also Latin metiri ‘to measure’ (the moon being used to measure time).
Definition:
The 18th Major Arcana card in most tarot card decks, generally portraying the full moon over a body of water with two pillars in the background, while two dogs and a crayfish watch. Upright, the card represents concepts such as illusions, fear, instinct, and the subconscious. Reversed, the card represents things such as the release of fear, misunderstandings, repressed emotion, and inner confusion.
