The word tourmaline itself is from the mid 18th century: from French, based on Sinhalese tōramalli ‘carnelian’. The name for this variety of the stone comes from its colors and resemblance to watermelon [fruit].

Definition:
Watermelon tourmaline is a crystalline borosilicate permeated with manganese, chromium, and lithium. Initial layers of manganese form the pink inner core. Manganese got replaced by chromium or lithium at some stage in the gem's history, creating the outer green layers. The pink center and green outer are often separated by a very pale pink or white sliver as the transition took place. The center is pink, surrounded by an outer "rind" of white and green, which resembles a watermelon slice. Tourmaline itself is a typically black or blackish mineral that occurs as prismatic crystals in granitic and other rocks. It consists of a boron aluminosilicate and has pyroelectric and piezoelectric properties.
